Ways to Improve Study Habits

Studying to enrich your life: Ways to improve your study habits

"How can I improve my study habits?"

It can be exiting and fun to study, because you know that every time you do so, your life is going to be enriched, in some way. Unfortunately, not everyone sees studying that way. Perhaps to you, it is more like a dreaded chore that you have to do, rather than something that you look forward to doing.

Maybe you need to find ways to improve your study habits. If you are serious about studying, read on. Keep in mind the reality that your study habits are not something to take lightly, because it is not only your academic career that is at stake, but your entire future.

Here are some ways to help you improve your study habits.

Plan your study time carefully.

Plan your study time in such a way, that you know you are using every minute of it wisely. Make certain that the time you set aside for study is really that and not a time when you focus on other activities, like entertaining friends, playing with your dog and drawing cartoons.

Find a quiet place to study.

Finding a quiet place where you will not be distracted is important when you are trying to study. Be aware that you may be easily distracted by cell phones, televisions, cd players or dvd players. While these may be important in your life, there is a better time and place for them. Try studying in different areas at home and see which one is the best for you. If necessary, find a library room or a classroom. Make certain that where you choose to study is a comfortable place.

Organize the events of your day, evening and night.

Taking time to organize the events of your day, evening and night carefully, on a regular basis, can help you to study. You need to find sufficient time to study and if you are a good organizer, having your schedule organized will make studying easier.

Have everything you need at hand.

Make a point of having everything you need at hand when you are studying, as this will save you time. You will not have to go looking for things, like a dictionary or thesaurus, textbooks, notebooks, paper, rulers, pencils and erasers. Keep all of your textbooks in a place where you can access them quickly and in an orderly fashion. Have your computer set up with the programs that you need, so that you have easy access to them.

Assign specific blocks of time for studying.

If you are taking more than one course, it can be difficult to find time to cover all of the material properly. Determine approximately how much time you need for each course and assign a specific block of time for it. Use that time appropriately and when the time is over, move on to the next part of your studies. If you have extra time, go back to any subjects that require further work. Remember to allow yourself flexibility. Have a notepad close by and keep a running record of what you still need to do.

Avoid contact with mind altering drugs when you are studying.

When you are studying, avoid studying in places where there are mind altering drugs being used, like. marijuana. While they may appear to elevate your mood temporarily, you will find that you are not able to focus or concentrate properly on your studies and you will experience short term memory loss, even though you may not be aware of it. Depending upon your exposure, it may cause temporary or permanent damage to your health.

Find a good study partner.

Finding a study partner serious about studying, can be of benefit to you, particularly if you feel that it is difficult for you to study alone. Make certain that what is taking place when you are together is what you should be doing. Do not waste time gossiping, fooling around or doing things that are not studying. If your study partner does not prove to be a good study partner, find someone else or learn how to study alone.

Advise others when you will be available for them.

Other people, like children, family members and friends, may not understand your need to study in order to succeed. They may feel neglected or frustrated, because you do not seem to have time for them. Advise those around you how much time you need for studying and let them know when you will have time for them, so that you can maintain good relationships with everyone.

Make your study time, serious study time and nothing else.

Many times, when you are trying to study, you unknowingly get involved in doing something that distracts you from studying like surfing the internet, answering voice mail, sending e-mails and doodling. When you find that you are not going the right direction, stop what you are doing immediately and return to serious studying. Set some time aside to do the other things later.

Do not try to study when you are too tired.

It is easier to study when you feel well rested. Trying to study when you are too tired to concentrate can be difficult. For a full time student, it may be difficult to find enough hours in your day to do all of the studying that you know you need to do. Sometimes you have to study when you are tired. Taking a five minute break lying flat on your back, may help to relieve that fatigue. If you are too tired to study, sleep for a while. Get up early in the morning to study, if necessary.

Plan to have regular exercise breaks.

Planning exercise breaks on a regular basis when you are studying, will help you feel better and more relaxed. Get up, walk around or do some exercises. If possible, go outdoors for a walk or a bike ride, so that you get fresh air. You will return to your studies feeling fresher and more energetic.

Develop a study plan with distinct goals.

Developing a study plan that has distinct goals is important. Know exactly what you intend to accomplish, every time you are studying. For example, what topic will you study and when? How many pages of reading will you cover? Make a point of sticking to your plan, if possible, but try not to be too rigid in you goal setting or too hard on yourself. Don't beat yourself up.

Allow time for breaks.

Always allow time for appropriate breaks during your designated study time. Remember that study time is not a good time to feast on snacks. It is the time to focus on your academic pursuits. Rewarding yourself with a good snack break now and then, is a great idea. Eat healthy snacks. There are other appropriate rewards too, like lunch with a friend, a hike or a movie.

There are many ways you can improve your study habits, so add them to this list. Post this where you can see it and remind yourself regularly, that you are going to succeed. You will, if you improve your study habits. Teach others to do the same. Studying to enrich your life is always a good idea.
