How to Stick to Diets

Changing lifestyles

"How can people stick to diets?"

Sticking to diets is always a challenge for some people, while for others, it does not seem to be that difficult. One might ask why this is so.

"Why can some people stick to diets and others cannot?"

Diets are like New Year's resolutions that people make, promises they intend to keep or rules that are easily broken. Everyone starts off with good intentions, but unfortunately the New Year's resolutions fall by the wayside, the promises are not kept and rules are broken. This puts everyone in the same category.

Look at your diet for a moment.

"How can you stick to your diet?"

Here are some easy ways to solve your dilemma.

The best way to stick to your diet is not to consider it a diet. It is going to be a change in your life style.
Changing your life style is not easy, but is everything supposed to be easy? No.

The best time to begin the change in your life style is right now. Why wait or procrastinate? You have decided to do something about your weight and are serious about taking action. Circle today's date on the calendar. This is the first day of your new life style change.

You may or may not have decided what kind of a dietary management program you are going to go on. If you have not made a decision yet, do some research at your local library, in a bookstore or on the Internet.

Find out what kind of life style change, in terms of dietary management, you would prefer. Remember that losing weight is going to bring about other life style changes too. Dietary management is part of it and the part to start with first.

You may decide to consult your physician about your proposed life style change regarding dietary management and obtain guidelines from him or her, as to body mass index and your appropriate weight for your body build and height. Ask your physician if the dietary management program you are considering is right for you, at this time in your life. He or she may be able to assist you. Ask about vitamin and mineral supplements, as well.

Sometimes, it is a good idea to assess what you have in your kitchen cupboards and refrigerator, because what is there represents your life before your proposed lifestyle change. If what you have does not fit into your new dietary management program, it is time to eliminate them and do not purchase those things again. Begin to stock your kitchen cupboards and refrigerator with items that are going to be included in your new life style change and dietary management program.

Changes in any lifestyle can be difficult, but think positive, as you know deep in your heart that what you are doing is better for you health wise and if it is hard initially, it will become easier, over time.

Take a moment and hop on the scale. You are going to keep a record of your weight on a daily basis. This is important, so that you know exactly what you weigh, at this time, day one. Remember that you are going to succeed and every day from now on, will show a change in your weight, so don't give up before you start.

Fluids are important for weight loss and management. Your new lifestyle change in respect to dietary management will include seven to eight glasses of water a day. This will flush out your system and eliminate toxins that are causing you to feel tired or ill. Decide when you will drink water and how much.

Now decide what food you are going to eat and what beverages you intend to consume, on a regular basis.

You have chosen your dietary management program and hopefully, included the kinds of food you like to eat. There is no point in forcing yourself to eat things you don't like. Find new ones that you do like and make certain they fit into your dietary management program.

Look seriously at your portion size too, because you can eat a small amount of something and stay on your lifestyle change program. Consuming anything in excess, will be outside of the guidelines you have set.

Life style changes do not occur overnight, so do not be too hard on yourself, if now and then, you slip back into old lifestyle patterns, with respect to your dietary management. Do not punish yourself. Simply get back on track.

Other lifestyle changes will be in terms of activity and exercise management. You can set up guidelines for these, too. See yourself as an active person, with a distinct lifestyle change goal.

You are going to reward yourself when you succeed. Even small successes are worth celebrating, but learn to celebrate in a way that helps to you to stick to your lifestyle change.

Set weekly, monthly and yearly goals. Reward yourself with things that are positive, when you achieve your lifestyle change goals. Plan a new wardrobe, a night out and a vacation.

Here is something to think about. When you are tempted to revert back to your old lifestyle, try carrying around a ten pound weight, for one day. Take it everywhere you go. You will soon be glad that you started your lifestyle change.

Find a lifestyle change buddy and enjoy your new lifestyles together.

Lifestyle changes will bring out the best in you. Sticking to diets may be outmoded in this day and age, but changing lifestyles is not.
