Travel safety tips for dogs
Is this the first time you have
traveled with your dog? Traveling with a dog can be fun, but he will have needs
and safety factors to consider.
Food
When you are traveling is not a
good time to try to change your dog's diet, so stick to his normal regime to
prevent him from having bowel problems. Limit his snacks to dog treats. Don't
forget his medications.
Water
Take water along for your dog,
because drinking different water may cause health problems. He could refuse to
drink water that does not smell right or become ill from drinking contaminated
water.
Breaks
Your dog needs regular breaks
when traveling. A good run will settle him down, if he is restless in the car.
Run with him. Exercise is good for you too. If you let your dog run alone beside
the road, he may chase rabbits or skunks. Keep him on a leash in unfamiliar
territory. Remember to take a plastic bag.
Motels
Advise your prospective motel
owner that you are traveling with a dog. Obtain advice as to where you can
stay, if there are no pets allowed. Dogs can be noisy in motel rooms, as they
hear every sound and may try to protect you. Don't leave a dog unattended in a
motel room. He may disappear before you get back.
Bathing
Give your dog a regular bath,
as it will keep him clean, fresh and comfortable. If you let him go for a swim,
make sure that you are in a place, where you can get him back. If he swims
across a creek, you may have to swim after him.
Security
Dogs like to feel secure and security
is important to them. Make certain he is wearing a dog tag, in case he gets
lost. If he does get lost, report it, immediately. Do not leave him unattended,
in a locked car. Keep a window open, when it is hot! Take his favorite blanket
or toys along so that he feels secure. Carry a picture of him with you also.
Needles
Are your dog’s needles up to
date? Carry a record of them with you.
Photo
Carry a picture of your dog with
you in case he gets lost.
Most dogs love to travel with
their owners! If he is happy, you will know it. He will sing along with you and
any music you play. He might even out sing you!
A dog can be a wonderful
traveling companion. Enjoy traveling together.
