When you are on a diet, getting
excited about what you can eat to lose weight or to maintain your current
weight, can be really difficult.
Here are some suggestions about
good things that you can eat throughout the day.
Raisins
Raisins are high in iron and
will help increase your energy level. Once your energy level increases, you
will be more active, do more things and lose weight. Remember that raisins are
high in sugar, so if you are on a sugar restricted diet, you can still have
raisins. Just eat fewer of them.
Grapes
Grapes are great to nibble on
throughout the day, particularly if you like the sweet, green ones. They are
refreshing when served cold. Grapes will help to satisfy your appetite and to
regulate your bowels, at the same time. When your bowels function properly, you
will lose weight.
Popcorn
Popcorn is a wonderful snack
food that has the advantage of not containing a lot of calories. It will fill
you up. Here is an easy way to make it. Put a very small amount of olive oil in
the bottom of the pan. Add a bit of salt and pop the corn. It comes out perfect
every time and you do not need to add any butter. Try adding a few spices to it, too. The scent of popcorn popping is tantalizing.
Rye bread
Any of the dry and toasted rye
or whole wheat breads, are great to munch on throughout the day, because they
are relatively low in calories and carbohydrates. These are preferable to many
kinds of crackers made with refined white flour, because the food value is
higher and they are chewier. Part of satiating your appetite has to do
with chewing your food properly. It has been suggested that you need to chew
every bite twenty five times, in order to really get the full enjoyment and all
of the nutrition out of your food. Enjoy every morsel, instead of just gulping
down your food.
Carrot sticks
Carrot sticks can be enjoyable
to snack on, during the day. While many people love to eat fresh carrots, right
out of the garden, it does not have the same elegance, as cutting them up and
serving them with a touch of class. It is fun to set up a small plate of carrot
sticks, intermingled with a few other munchies. Be classy. Enjoy your carrot
sticks. Carrots are excellent for your eyesight, also.
Celery
Celery sticks are great for
munching on, too. Part of losing weight has to do with getting rid of excess
fluid. Celery acts as a natural diuretic. Eating celery on a regular basis, will
help to increase your vitamin consumption. If you are getting enough vitamins
every day, you will feel better. Try snacking on broccoli, fresh, green, snow
peas and tiny tomatoes. Cucumber acts as a diuretic, so serve cucumber slices
with a low calorie dip using yogurt or skip the dip and eat them plain. You
might try sprinkling them with a bit of vinegar, salt and sugar.
Peppermint
Eating a peppermint during the
day is not going to cause you to gain weight. Peppermint candies do contain
sugar, so restrict the number that you eat. Having a couple of after dinner
mints may satisfy your craving for sugar after a meal, so you don't need to
consume a whole bag of peppermints. They are great for your breath, too.
Grapefruit
Grapefruit is a wonderful fruit
to eat at any time, during the day. Part of the advantage to eating half of a
grapefruit a day, is that it will help you to digest your food properly. You
can make a fruit salad easily by cutting up a grapefruit. Add fresh or frozen
strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and grapes. Put it in the refrigerator
and eat it cold. You may not need to add sugar or a sweetener, as most fruits
contain fructose or fruit sugar. If you do not have grapefruit available, you
can do the same thing with oranges, or enjoy orange slices.
Yogurt
Yogurt is one of the foods that
can be satisfying, when a person is dieting. Yogurt restores the normal bowel
flora and aids in the digestion of your food. When your food is digested
properly, you are able to lose weight and maintain a desirable weight.
Almonds
Almonds are great to snack on when
you are dieting. They are also heart healthy. Other kinds of nuts or sunflower
seeds are good, but remember that in excess, they can elevate your cholesterol
level. They may have a high salt content. Moderation in everything is a good
rule of thumb.
Cottage cheese
Even when you are dieting, you
need calcium to maintain healthy bones and teeth, so one of the snack
foods that you could include during your day, is low fat cottage cheese. Place
one third of a cup of cottage cheese in a small fruit bowl, sprinkle it with
salt and pepper or top it with fresh fruit. Remember to watch your
portions size.
Popsicles

When dieting, you need to drink
about eight ounces of water per day. Rather than drink all of the water from a
glass, try making popsicles. Add concentrated fruit juice, orange, apple or
grape. and get extra vitamins, at the same time. They can be refreshing on a
hot, summer day. Try making a smoothie.
Boiled eggs
Having a boiled egg during the
day, as a snack, can satisfy your body's need for protein. If your
cholesterol level is elevated, you may limit the number of eggs you
consume on a weekly basis.
Cheese
Cheese is a high protein dairy
food that makes a healthy snack. Cut your cheese into small chunks, insert a
toothpick and serve it with grapes. Restrict your cheese intake to one or two
ounces per day or less, as the salt and fat content can be high, depending upon
the kind of cheese that you purchase. Try to buy low fat cheeses or ones that
are spicy. Spices and herbs help to satiate the appetite. Too much cheese can cause constipation and will make your weight to go up, not
down. You might try putting cheese whiz on your celery sticks instead. That is good.
Watermelon
Watermelon is a healthy snack
on a hot day. It contains a lot of fluid, but not many calories. Cut your
slices into quarters and they will not be messy to eat.
Banana
Banana
One banana can make an
excellent snack during the day. It will help to fill that void when you are
hungry. Note that bananas are high in potassium and good for your blood
pressure, as well as your heart.
There are many other snacks you
can eat during the day and still lose weight. Dieting does not mean that you
cannot eat. It does mean that you will want to eat smarter. Always use the
touch of class principle. Diet, eat and enjoy your food.
