Do you want to improve your study habits? Staying healthy is one the most important things that you can do, when you are in college or university.

Here are ten health tips that will help you to improve your study habits.

Maintain a healthy balance of sleep, rest and relaxation.

If you have seven to eight hours of sleep at night, you will feel better and your ability to concentrate on your studies will improve. Rest and relax, when you are able to do so and you will find that your stress level decreases. When you sense tension, breathe deeply, as that will help you to relax. Take five minutes every now and then, just for yourself. Do something that helps you to relax and then, resume your studying.

Develop a regular exercise routine.

Spending time exercising will keep you healthy and physically fit. Regular exercise will maintain and improve your muscle tone. Try to have outdoor exercise every day, as it will increase the oxygen level in your blood stream. Your circulation will improve and you will stay heart healthy. You will find that you have an increased level of mental alertness. When you are studying, get up and move around regularly.

Limit your alcohol consumption.

If you are consuming alcohol, be aware that excessive alcohol consumption can impair your thought processes and make it difficult for you to concentrate on your studies. There is a time when alcohol in moderation is appropriate, but it is not when you are studying. For example, having a glass of wine with an evening meal may be appropriate, but if you need to study, it may make you sleepy. Avoid places where there are large amounts of alcohol consumed by other students.

Take vitamins and minerals.

Taking vitamins and minerals in excess can be harmful to your health, while taking appropriate dosages of vitamins and minerals will be beneficial to you. If you are tired all the time, you may need iron, but consult physician for serious, deficiency problems. Avoid excessive consumption of one vitamin, as maintaining a proper vitamin-mineral balance in your body is important. Try to obtain vitamins and minerals from your food. Eat fruits and vegetables daily.

Avoid using prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs and mind altering drugs.

Using any drugs in excess, can be harmful to your health. Consult your physician before taking prescription drugs. Avoid over-consumption of non-prescription drugs, as you can encounter serious side effects. You may find that some will make you drowsy and you will not be able to study effectively. For example, cough syrups make you fall asleep, as will medications like gravol or other medications that contain codeine. Avoid mind-altering drugs like marijuana, as they will affect your short term memory, in a negative way and your ability to focus on your studies. Be aware that there are many chemicals and drugs added to cigarettes. These could also affect your ability to concentrate when you are studying.

Eat regular meals that are high in nutrition.

Plan on regular mealtimes and make certain the food that you are consuming is healthy for you. Avoid excess sugar and carbohydrates, as they will make you sleepy. Use common sense when snacking and you will be able to study better. Always maintain a good balance in your diet. Make breakfast an important part of your day.

Drink plenty of water.

Normally, the human body needs approximately eight to ten glasses of water per day. Increasing your water consumption will flush residual toxins and help improve your circulation. You will feel better and be more effective in your academic work. Drink water or fruit juice rather than excessive amounts of coffee, tea or soft drinks.

Avoid crowded places.

If possible, avoid crowded areas where there are a lot of students, in order to avoid contact with colds, viruses, cold sores, mononucleosis or more serious infections. If you have repeated infections, contact your physician. If you contact infections of any kind, it can cost you study time.

Practice good personal hygiene.

Good personal hygiene is important for you and those around you. Wash your hands well. Bathe or shower daily and wear clean clothes. Practice good foot care in order to avoid problems with your feet. Wash your hair regularly. If you look good, you will feel good and you will be able to study more efficiently.

Avoid random sexual activity and take appropriate safety precautions.

Sexually transmitted diseases run rampant on college or university campuses, so avoid random sexual activity. Take the appropriate safety precautions, so that you do not contract a disease that will lead to serious problems, in the future. Practice birth control measures. Remember that you are focusing on your studies at this time, not on raising a family.
