Ways to Expand a Business

The sky is the limit

Congratulations! You have succeeded in establishing a viable business, but now you want to expand it further. Perhaps you are not certain how to do that.

Here are some ways to expand a business:

What was your original vision?

Look seriously at the kind of a business you have established. Ask yourself if this was the original vision you had for your business. Was it what you dreamed about doing and expected to achieve? It may be time for a new vision, based upon the groundwork and the foundation that you have laid.

What were your original goals, or expectations?

Perhaps you have not reached your previous goals and expectations. Pinpoint the reason for this and find ways to rectify the problem. Take the time to do a serious analysis of old short term and long term goals.

Look at your initial business plan.

When you wrote your business plan originally, did it include room for expansion? Perhaps you had not thought that far ahead. Maybe you drew up an immediate, short term business plan. If that is the case, it is time to move forward.

Begin to revise your business plan.

Your business plan should state exactly what you are trying to accomplish, over a period of time. Business plans can be revised at any time and yours may be in need of revision, so begin to put the wheels in motion now.

Establish new short or long term goals.

It is always a feasible option to establish new short and long terms goals that are more appropriate for your new vision. Remember that nothing stays the same and your business needs to expand in order to accommodate change.

Examine the strengths and the weakness in your business.

It is the strengths in your business that have enabled you to come to this point in time, with the degree of success that you have achieved. It is the weaknesses that may be preventing further expansion. There may be a way you can turn your weaknesses into strengths. Consider that possibility and find a way to act on it.

Do a financial analysis of your existing business, as it stands.

Perhaps what is preventing further expansion of your business is the current financing. By doing a financial analysis, you may be able to discern where the problem lies. There may be other financing options available. Speak to your bookkeeper and accountant and talk to your banker or the person handling your business financing.

Seek advice from the experts.

Many times when you are involved in a business, you cannot see past what you are doing, because you are too busy. There may be too many things for you to take care of by yourself. Consider hiring employees to lighten your work load. If you have a management team in place, defer some of your responsibilities to them, while you take a serious look at the possibility of future expansion. Talk to them about expansion and speak to an expert in the field, who will be able to advise you further.

Increase your advertising.

Increasing your advertising is a concrete way to see future expansion. Keep in mind the fact that advertising is expensive and make certain that your business is able to handle the expansion and the cost, particularly with respect to the provision of services or a product.

Build or expand your web site.

If you have not done so, consider the possibility of building a web site for your business. There are a number of ways you can do this. You can use a template or learn basic scripting required to design and build a web site or you can hire a professional web designer, who will set it up for you. If you have an existing web site, consider doing revisions.

Talk about your business.

Word of mouth is one of the best ways to advertise anything. If you talk about your business in a positive and constructive way, others will respond, in that way and do the same. Your business will grow in leaps and bounds.

Design flyers.

There are many possible options with respect to designing flyers, which can be distributed, in your immediate area. If you do not have the expertise needed to create the flyers, find someone who is willing and able to do it. You will be glad that you did.

Begin to use your own letterhead paper and envelopes.

If you take the time to design your own letterhead paper and envelopes and use them, you will find that they do advertising for you, every time you have correspondence. You could hire someone to do this for you also.

Consider e-mail advertising.

E-mail advertising is one way to reach many people, quickly. A word of caution is in order, as your advertising may be considered spam mail and may be blocked. Responding to an inquiry with an e-mail advertisement is appropriate. Add a personal note too.

Design your own logo.

Many businesses expand when a logo is implemented. All of a sudden, what you are doing in terms of your business is visible in your logo. People can relate to a logos.

Use business cards.

Business cards make it easy for others to contact you, with respect to using your service or products. Hand them out every time you meet someone new. Ask them to pass them along to others, too.

These are ways to expand your business, without a lot of extra expense or hardship.

Remember that the sky is the limit, in terms of business expansion, so reach high.
