A Guide to Teaching Children How to Fish

Teach children to fish and they may not go hungry

Teaching children to fish is important, all over the world. When does one begin teaching a child to fish? This is something that should begin, early in the life of a child. A child can be taught about fishing and what it means to fish, at an early age. How the child comprehends it, may depend upon his or her age and level of understanding. Of course, children learn in many different ways and from many different sources.

Examine some of these ways, beginning with teaching a child when he or she is very young.

Many children's books and toys are designed or written, with teaching a child to fish in mind. Both of these are excellent ways to start teaching a child to fish. Reading to the child or playing with him or her can be initiated while the child is a baby.

Having a member of the family, who actively fishes for a living or for pleasure, presents an excellent role model for a child. The child sees his or her parents or older siblings getting ready to go fishing and gradually begins to understand that this is something that is important, even though he or she does not understand what is happening or why it is important to them.

Giving a child the gift of a baseball cap or a t-shirt, with a picture of a fisherman or a fish, helps the child to learn. The child may still not understand what it means, but he or she will begin to relate to the pictures in a positive way.

Talking to a child about fishing is another way a child learns to fish. Hearing a parent, or grandparent relate fishing stories, can be a fun thing way for a child to learn to fish. "How big was that fish that got away?"
As the child gets older, there are different kinds of toys, some of those representing fish or fishing equipment, like fishing rods. The child probably does not understand exactly what fishing is, but gradually learns what a fish is and the reality that fish can be caught with fishing rods.

Taking this a step further, a child can be taught the importance of fish and fishing by being given fish to eat, on a regular basis. Telling a child, "This is the fish that Daddy caught. It is so good!" helps a child to learn to appreciate fish, as a food that he or she will learn to like and appreciate. It will be special or have significance for the child, because he or she understands that his or her parent had a part in providing it for the family.

Teaching children stories, songs or rhymes about fish, fishermen or fishing is another way that children can learn about fish and fishing.

"I am going fishing and it is more than just wishing!"

As a child becomes old enough to be included in different games, there is a game that is called "fish" that he or she can begin to play. While it is not actually fishing as such, the word fish becomes part of his or her vocabulary.

Teaching a child about different kinds of fish is important. Pictures or videos are excellent teaching tools. Showing a child fish in a grocery store or a fish market, can be important in the learning process.
A child can learn that he or she likes fish and chips or other kinds of fish, like salmon or tuna, by a parent giving a child, tastes of fish on a regular basis. Identifying different kinds of fish to a child, as they are served helps him or her to relate the reality of fish in our diet, as good food.

Being allowed to help or helping a parent or an older sibling to get ready to go fishing, is another way that children learn to fish. They see that in order to go fishing, there are certain things that must be done. Role modeling is important.

Teaching a child about fishing tackle is important in the learning to fish process. A child always asks questions about everything. As he or she sees a person handling fishing rods and fishing tackle, asking questions is a natural thing to do. Giving a child appropriate answers to his or her questions is important, as the child is seeking to learn and does need to be taught. It also helps the child identify what is needed in order to fish. Drawing pictures and learning new words about fish or fishing, is a good way to learn to fish too.

As a child is being introduced to fishing rods, reels, lines, weights and hooks, he or she will be storing all of the information in his or her brain. This is an excellent time to begin teaching fishing safety. A child should not be handling anything that can harm him or her. If the parent or person with the child, explains why there is danger, the child will begin to understand and learn to be careful.

Young children can be taken fishing by their parents or siblings, under supervision. This is an important learning experience for children. There are many factors to take into consideration, including water safety.
As a child sits beside his or her parents or siblings who are fishing, the child can be taught what it means to go fishing. Again, there are safety concerns. There are many things that a child must be taught, but what better way to learn than by an appropriate example?

A child can be given a toy fishing rod and reel and can practice fishing with it, long before the child is ready to actually do any fishing.

When the child is old enough, he or she can be taught the skills needed for fishing, like what bait to use, where to find it, how to bait a hook, as well as how to hold and use a rod and reel.

These are not all of the things he or she needs to learn, as there are others including what to do when there is a fish on the line, how to reel it in, how to use a net, what to do with the fish after it has been caught, how to carry a fish, as well as cleaning and filleting a fish. How to cook a fish is also important.

Teaching children to fish does not guarantee that they will never go hungry, but it is one method of survival. Fishing is an important skill for children to learn and this learning should be started, at an early age. It is important that every child learns to respect fish, fishing as hobby, fishing as a possible source of food or income, later in life. Remember that on a world wide basis, fishing is one possible means of survival for human beings.
